Jewell Victoria Pope was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on January 15, 1929, to the late George Johnson Sr. and Pearl Johnson. She was the first born of three. She grew up in a loving family surrounded by her sister, brother, aunt Eugenia Laray and uncle Dan Laray.

She accepted Christ at an early age and attended Evergreen Baptist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

She graduated from Dorsey High School and continued her education in nursing. She worked at LA County General Hospital where she practiced nursing. She later worked as a Secretary for R.J. Johnson Business Services.

In 1957, Jewell was introduced to Edward Percy Pope, the love of her life, by way of his brother, Robert Charles Pope. Jewell and Ed were married in 1963.  They lived a Christian life together and celebrated 43 years of blissful marriage. Jewell was a very caring person who shared her time not only with her husband but all who surrounded her. She was the center of our family and the glue that held us all together. Jewell was a loving aunt, sister and wife. She was always ready to help those who were in need.

Jewell loved to travel and read. She also enjoyed being able to spend time and the holidays with her family and friends.

She was a member of the Esther Circle, Lake Charles Social Club and the National Federation of The Blind. She was a pioneer and a devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church since 1940.

Jewell went home to be with the Lord on November 9, 2015. She is loved by all, and she will be deeply missed.

Those who preceded her in death are husband Edward P. Pope, father George Johnson Sr., mother Pearl Johnson and brother George Johnson Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her sister Eugenia Sweatt; daughter Balledette Berry; granddaughter LaTriece Berry; grandson China Berry; great grandson Jabri Edward Berry; uncle Clifton (Evelyn) Avery; aunt Josephine Avery; nephews Darryl (Helen) Sweatt and Myron (Denitrice) Sweatt; brother-in-law Robert (Nina) Pope; grand nieces and nephews: Daniel Sweatt, Breean Sweatt, Nicole Beridon, and Raven (James) Tate, as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

As we go about our daily lives, as we face the challenges and problems life provides us with and, most importantly, as we raise the next generations, the best way we can honor Jewell is by asking ourselves, âwhat would she say or do if she were here?â If we can think or even imagine that - we might come close to measuring up to the legacy she left us - love, caring and most of all family.
