Minnie Lee Weaks
December 11,
1934 - October 10,
2019
Message From Family
The family of Minnie Lee Weaks would like to thank you for the many acts of loving-kindness shown to us during our bereavement. Your thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated and will always be remembered.
Minnie Lee Weaks was born in Tallulah, Louisiana, on December
11, 1934. She
was the second of nine children born to Matthew Sr. and Rena
(Madea) Phillips
(both parents and five siblings preceded her in death). She
attended McCall High
School in Tallulah, Louisiana.
Minnie accepted Christ and was baptized when she was 12 years
old, at East Star
MBC (Tallulah, Louisiana). After arriving in Los Angeles,
California, she placed
membership at Mt. Pilgrim MBC under the leadership of Rev. Lucy Davis.
Minnie
continued her spiritual walk in Christ. In 1981, she transferred
her membership
to Little Zion MBC (now known as Greater Zion Church Family)
under the
leadership of Rev. Jerome Fisher (then later under the
leadership of Michael
JT Fisher). She attended Worship Services faithfully until she
became ill in 2012.
Minnie loved to sing. She sang with the Voices of Zion for many
years. Throughout
that time she traveled many places with Rev. Jerome Fisher, and
the Voices of
Zion.
Minnie gave birth to two strong sons, Henry Washington, Jr. and
Emmitte
Washington. She loved her sons, daughters-in-law, and all
of her grandchildren
dearly. Her grandson, Jamal Washington, preceded her in death.
She later married
Calvin Weaks, an Army Veteran (who preceded her in death).
When Minnie came to California, she started out working as a
Machine Operator
(making quilts and bedspreads) to make ends meet. She later
realized sewing
was not her passion. Her passion was being a caregiver to anyone
in need. Minnie,
at various times, took care of her grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, her father,
mother, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends. She cared for so
many people; it’s
difficult to name them all. She was a caregiver until she became
ill.
Minnie had such an outgoing and pleasant personality that you
couldn’t help but
love her. Her smile lit up the room. She never met a person she
didn\'t like or
wouldn\'t help.
Minnie is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law: Henry
Washington, Jr.
(Andrenetta), and Emmitte Washington; two brothers and
sisters-in-law: Jimmy
Phillips (Terrolyn), and Eddie Phillips (Shaun); one sister:
Lillian Walker;
grandchildren: Henry Washington, III (LaTrice), LaToya
Washington, Ebony
Washington, and Trenel McCall; great-grandchildren: Desmond,
Amari, Jacari,
and Isaiah; goddaughter, Jearlena Isrel, and a host of nieces,
nephews, other
relatives
and friends.
