In Loving Memory of Benny Story
March 14, 1928 - October 1, 2019
Benny Hudson Story, Jr., was born the seventh child of the late
Rev. Benny H. Story, Sr. and the eleventh
child of his late mother, Minnie V. Davis Story, on March 14,
1928, in Texarkana, Arkansas.
At the age of one, the family returned to the homestead in Noxubee,
Arkansas where Benny was baptized in
Elam CME Church.In the 1940s, the family moved back to
Texarkana, Arkansas and he was united with
Walker Chapel CME Church.
Benny attended Booker T. Washington High School, where he
starred on the basketball team. After graduation
he spent a semester at Tuskegee Institute.
He moved to Los Angeles, California, and delivered telegrams for
Western Union while living with his older
brother, Odie. After several months of working, he returned to
Benny was an avid jazz enthusiast who also enjoyed playing and
watching sports. He collected stamps and
continued to use them on a regular basis sending birthday cards
to his family and friends. He loved to take
pictures with his Polaroid, always being the photographer and
not the subject. He enjoyed dancing and
partying with family and friends. He was very innovative, always
finding ways for things to work more
Benny worked a number of years participating in family
businesses. He ran his sister, Minnie's Cafe in East
St. Louis, Illinois, and in 1950, he ran a gas station and cafe
while driving a cab on the side.
In 1952, his mother called from Texarkana and informed him that "Uncle
Sam" was calling. He had to close
the gas station and cafe and head for home. He was drafted by
the United States Army, where he received
glowing commendations and was extremely proud. He served as military
police while stationed at Fort
Ord from September 1952 to June 1954. After being honorably
discharged, he was admitted to Cal State LA
and attended three years of night school.
Benny began his career with the Department of Water & Power
and retired after 31 years of dedicated service.
In July of 1959, Benny's first child, Erik, was born and he
became a doting father.
Benny met his loving wife, Ethel Williams, while employed at DWP
and began a courtship that resulted in
their marriage on June 1964. From this union three children,
Dexter, Timothy, and Tamryn were born.
In his later years, he embraced technology. Once he was
introduced to the internet, his love became sending
emails with pictures and jokes and challenging others at Words
with Friends on his iPad. He learned to pay
bills and observe on Facebook. He was not afraid of a new
Benny remained a devoted husband, father, and grandfather until
his passing on October 1, 2019. Preceding
Benny in death were his parents, Benny and Minnie Story, his
brothers: Jodie Isaac Manus, Odie Lee Manus,
Jessie B. Manus, and Henry Taft Manus Jr.; sisters: Gladys
Thornton, Jeweldine Hamdani, Minnie Thomas,
Nina Wilkins, and Annise Decree.
Cherishing Benny's memories are his wife, Ethel W. Story,
brother, Phillip Vancel Story, children: Erik (Sherry)
Story, Dexter (Annette) Story, Tamryn (Jeff) Wilkins, and
Timothy (Vicky) Story; his grandchildren: Cymone
Story, Yusef Story, Ethan Story, Marissa Starks, Justin Wilkins,
Renee Story, Jared Wilkins, Mia Story, and
Story; he also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
