In Loving Memory of Levi Canady

December 19, 1937 - September 22, 2019

Levi Canady affectionately known as "The Candy Man," was a loving husband and father. On December 19, 1937, Levi was born to Elbert Candy and Malendy "Big Momma" Byers in Hattiesville, Arkansas. He was the second of thirteen children: Willie, Ollie Mae, Seletha, Denver, Serviner, Dewitt, Joseph, Shelton, Jerry, Roscoe, Michael, and Glenn.

As a young man, he became employed as a machinist for General Motors in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1966 he transferred to Los Angeles, California GM plant, where he worked until his retirement.

Levi enjoyed horse races, playing cards and dominoes with friends and just having a great time. He had a laugh that was very infectious. Whenever he laughed, everybody around him would laugh just off of his laugh.

Levi was a man who truly loved everybody, and he wanted to make sure everybody knew he loved them. He would always ask the question, "Who loves you, baby?" and he would expect you to give a list of names of people who loved you, all to make sure you knew his name needed to be on that list too. When asked the "Who loves you" question, his grandchildren were known to answer, my mother, my father, my sister, my brother, my aunties, and uncles, my cousins and Poppie Levi.

Levi was a devout Christian man who served the Lord with gladness. He served in many areas. He was a Deacon, he was a Sunday School Teacher, and during many summer months, he would handle various maintenance work at his home church.

On Sunday, September 22, 2019, peacefully in his sleep, Levi went home to be with the Lord.

Levi was preceded in death by his parents Elbert and Big Momma, 4 siblings: Willie, Seletha, Dewitt, and Joseph; his wife, Debra and his eldest granddaughter Marquesia.

He leaves to cherish his many memories 6 brothers: Denver, Shelton, Jerry, Roscoe, Michael, and Glenn, 2 sisters: Ollie Mae, and Serviner; his former wife Carolyn, 4 children: Derrick, Derryl, Tina, and Tyesa and their spouses; 2 stepchildren: Donotus, and Donare; 8 grandchildren: Joi, Derryl Jr., Danielle, Charles, Dijon, Trinity, Perry Jr., and Perris, 5 great-grandchildren: Saundra, Zahkari, Charley, Taliyah, and Parker. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
