In Loving Memory of Jerome C. Gavin

September 10, 1948 - November 12, 2018

J.C. Gavin was born September 10, 1948, in Sharkey Country, Mississippi to Gus and Florence Gavin. He was the fifth of ten children. J.C. was the oldest boy and was affectionately call "Brother" or "Braly." He came to Los Angeles from MS at the early age of nine.

J.C. attended Ninety-Second Street Elementary School, Markham Jr. High School, and David Starr Jordan High School. When he was in high school he changed his name to Jerome Clifton Gavin after the principal suggested that he put a formal name on his diploma. J.C. gathered his family together during dinner and they came up with Jerome Clifton Gavin. During these years, J.C. accepted Christ and became a Sunday School Superintendant, Bible Study Teacher, and a Junior Deacon.

In high school he ran track, was an honor roll student, class president, quarter back, and captain of the football team. In his later years he attended East L.A. College, UCLA, and USC. He then went on and worked for Shields of Families as a Youth Director. J.C. also worked for Ninety-Second Street Elementary School for several years. In 1992 he and Terry Bester welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Jaterria C. Gavin into the world.

J.C. loved to exercise, take walks, travel, and watch the Game Arena. J.C. would always give sincere advise to his family, friends and anyone he encountered. He was a wonderful man who was loved by all. He was truly an Angel.

"Same ole soup, just reheated" was his favorite line when asked wha's up. Those that preceded hin in death were his parents, Gus and Florence Gavin, grandparents: Marie Watson, and Mitchell McNeal; his sisters: Velma Gavin, Margaret Baines, Mary Ann Johnson, and Mable Rucker; brothers: James Gavin, and John McNeal; his nephew, Jimmie Kimble, and niece, Louise Baines.

He leaves to cherish his memories his only child, Jaterria C. Gavin, sisters: Thelma Gavin, and Bessie Gipson; brother, Eddie Gavin (Darline), and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
