In Loving Memory of Ned Miles, Sr.

November 26, 1926 - April 12, 2018

Ned Miles, Sr., was born on November 26, 1926, to Robert and Amy Miles in Gould, Arkansas. As a boy growing up on a farm he learned many lessons including very strong work ethics. He also took advantage of the public education afforded to him.

As he grew up, Ned began singing with a local church band and initially thought that he wanted to pursue singing as a career. While on the farm, he learned to drive cars by operating the plows. A little-known fact is that he later learned to drive a motorcycle and enjoyed riding.

On April 4, 1945, at the ages of 18 and 16, Ned married Gennie Mae Tobias on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Soon, they were on their way to Chicago. While expecting their first child,  his wife Gennie moved back to her home in Lake Village, Arkansas and Ned was drafted to the United States Navy serving two years earning an Asiatic Pacific Medal and Victory Medal. Following his honorable discharge, Ned, Gennie and their son Charles moved to Los Angeles California in 1948.

Ned, who was one of eight children, always desired children. He actually wanted four! But God blessed him and his wife with a full house of eleven wonderful gifts: Charles, June, Melvie, Betty, Bunny, Pat, Thelma, Lenny, Wayne, Leora and Kevin.

A dedicated public servant, Ned worked for the City of Los Angeles as a sanitation truck driver for 36 years. He stated that he took an advanced exam with the city so that he could drive rather than ride on the outside. He would jump out and help when needed. He was loved by many on his route and received numerous gifts.

Ned loved his extended family. He chaired the annual family reunion for many years. He and his wife Gennie often hosted numerous meetings at their home. Gennie did most of the talking but they both did much of the work which brought the entire family together with memories cherished for a lifetime.

During his 72 year marriage, Ned knelt down at his bedside and prayed to God every night. And while attending a celebration of his 50th wedding anniversary at Greater Circle Mission Church without saying a word to anyone, he walked to the front of the church and joined. He diligently served as an Usher until he was unable to do so, then he began receiving communion at home.

Ned was healthy all of his life and on his last day, April 12, 2018, he was speaking with his family members stating he was pain-free, happy and that he had just seen his name in "the book."

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Miles Jr., and Amy Miles, siblings: Ethylene, James, Willie, Joseph, Lillie Mae and Rosilee; his wife Gennie Mae and his sons, Charles and Kevin.

Ned leaves to cherish and carry on his legacy his children: Ned Jr. (Rita), Melva (Howard) Ollison, Betty Black, Yvonne (Harrison) Blackmond, Patricia, Thelma (David) Monette, Larry Leonard (Carolyn), Wayne (Juanita) and Leora Carol; his sister, Annie Mae Blaxson, and sisters-in-law, Cecilia McConnell and Fran Tobias; godchildren: Donzell, Lois and Linda, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grands, great-great-grands, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

While his family never got to hear him sing, that wonderful smile he gave while listening to his wife and kids sing during Christmas Eve gatherings, Easter dinners, Soul Food Sundays, and any occasion to be surrounded by those he loved, heaven knows he is singing again.
